A Network is an interconnection between two or more computers for the purpose of sharing resources and services. It is nothing more than two or more computers connected to each other so that they can exchange information, such as files, Printers and disk storage.

In today’s digital age, computer networking forms the backbone of global communication, business operations, and the internet itself. To truly understand how data moves across the globe, it is essential to explore how networks are classified based on their geographical size, structural layout (topology), and the foundational rules (protocols) they follow.

Classification by Size and Geographic Scope
Computer networks are categorized based on the physical area they cover. The most common types include:

PAN (Personal Area Network): The smallest network type, centered around a single person in a single location. An example is a smartphone connected to wireless earbuds via Bluetooth.

LAN (Local Area Network): Connects computers and devices within a limited geographic area, like a home, school, or office building. LANs offer high data-transfer speeds and secure resource sharing.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Covers a larger geographic area than a LAN, typically spanning an entire city or a large university campus.

WAN (Wide Area Network): Connects multiple smaller networks across massive distances, such as countries or continents. The Internet is the largest and most well-known public WAN in existence.
